# Markdown Hub 365: a GitHub-style knowledge base inside SharePoint — no permissions, no backend

**In short:** We have released a new product, Markdown Hub 365. A single web part turns a SharePoint document library of Markdown files into a full GitHub-style knowledge base — breadcrumb navigation, folder landing pages, Mermaid diagrams, syntax highlighting, working relative links and shareable deep links. The package requests **no permissions**, has **no backend**, and content **never leaves your tenant**. The Free plan is free forever, and Enterprise features can be trialled for 30 days without a licence key.

## The problem we are solving

Technical documentation is written in Markdown these days — in Git, in VS Code, and increasingly by Copilot or AI agents. But SharePoint, where everyone else reads it, can only display Markdown in a bare native viewer: no navigation, no search, broken links between files. The usual answer — migrating to a wiki or to pages — means copying the content out, and thereby forking it.

Markdown Hub 365 goes the other way: it leaves the files where they are and adds a reading layer on top. Authors carry on working in Markdown (in SharePoint, in Git, through sync), and readers get a GitHub-like experience — on a page of their own SharePoint site, in their site's own look.

## Why this is not just another web part

**1. A five-minute security review.** The package requests no API permissions — there is nothing to approve when it is deployed to the App Catalog, and no app registration acts on its behalf in Entra ID. All reading happens with the signed-in user's own permissions: whatever a user cannot open in the library, Markdown Hub will not show them either.

**2. Content never leaves the tenant.** All rendering libraries, Mermaid included, are bundled in the package — no CDN, no third-party servers. The only outbound call is the licence check. For organisations working on ISO 27001 or NIS2 this means controlled documentation stays where it belongs, with native SharePoint versioning and an auditable history.

**3. A bridge between Git and SharePoint.** Relative links between documents (`../guides/install.md`) resolve the way GitHub resolves them — documentation synced from a repository works unchanged. Every document also has a shareable deep link.

**4. Ready for the agent era.** A library with `SHAREPOINT.md` and skills doubles as grounding for Copilot in SharePoint. The Enterprise plan installs two ready-made agent skills in one click: **knowledge base quality audit** (stale documents, broken links, superseded information — read-only) and **export of selected Markdown files to Word**, including rendered Mermaid diagrams.

**5. Reading quality is not what separates free from paid.** The Free plan includes complete rendering — permanently.

## What is new in version 1.6

| Feature | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| In-app version restore (Enterprise) | View a historical version of a document and make it current with one confirmation — the previous one stays in the history |
| "Export to Word" skill (Enterprise) | Copilot merges selected Markdown files into a single Word document |
| Skill installation into the Agent Assets library | Skills are installed where Copilot in SharePoint finds them automatically |
| Dates follow the site's regional settings | Sites see dates in their own format — including times on versions and comments |

## Free vs Enterprise

| | Free | Enterprise |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Navigation, rendering, Mermaid, links | full | full |
| Cross-file search, document outline | — | yes |
| Version history with restore, comments | — | yes |
| Agent skills for Copilot | — | yes |
| Interface languages | English | 9 languages |

## Where it fits

IT runbooks and operational procedures, policies and controlled documentation (ISO 27001, NIS2), project and product documentation synced from Git, internal team knowledge bases — and anywhere you want the same documentation read by both people and Copilot.

## Getting started

1. **Deploy the package** to your tenant App Catalog — the permission consent step will not appear, because there are none.
2. **Add the web part** to a page and pick a document library. If it has a `README.md` in the root, you have a landing page.
3. **Try Enterprise:** the 30-day trial activates directly from the web part properties — no licence key, and it reverts to Free on its own when the trial ends.

Standing up your first knowledge base takes roughly 15 minutes.

## How to get the package

Markdown Hub 365 is **not yet in the Microsoft Marketplace** — approval is in progress. Until then we distribute the package directly.

**If you are already our customer:** the package and the full documentation are available after signing in at **portal.malachis.eu**. Every version is published with its SHA-256 hash, so you can verify you received exactly what we shipped.

**If you are not:** email **support@malachis.eu** or use the contact form. We will send you a download link and the package hash — not an attachment. An installable App Catalog package should not arrive as an email attachment, and we will not send one that way.

**Want to see it on your own content?** We will demonstrate Markdown Hub 365 against one of your own libraries. It takes half an hour and one test site — you do not have to install anything.

Once Marketplace approval completes, the package will be installable from there as well. Installations made now will continue to work.
